As I speak, my body
floods with the realisation that I have done what I came here to do. I’ve
actually done it. I allow myself a fiery thrust of achievement. Up go my
arms in the Olympic Gold Medal gesture. “I’ve done it!” I yell in English.
The
highly-acclaimed BLACK BREAD & CUCUMBER was written by Caroline Blakiston
following her unique experience as the first English actress to perform in
Chekhov in Russia in Russian (as Charlotta in The Cherry Orchard). She
first played the role in Taganrog, Chekhov’s birthplace, in 1991, and the
following year at the Moscow Art Theatre.
BLACK
BREAD & CUCUMBER was realised from extensive diaries of her time living and
working with Russian actors, both before and after the coup of 1991. In
1994, Caroline was presented with the Golden Globe Award in Moscow for her
special contribution to Russian Theatre. Caroline has performed BLACK BREAD
& CUCUMBER more than a hundred times all around the world. It is not a
play, but a true story shared with an audience.
